The required space of a consignment in the hold is specified in volume and referred to as the volume weight. This is important for the shipment of large and light shipments, because here no longer the weight is used as the basis for the delivery price, but the required volume. A very light goods can ever claim the entire cargo space. If the shipping was calculated by weight, there would be losses on the part of the transport company. The volume weight is used particularly frequently in aviation. The volume calculation is officially specified by the IATA and almost all major service providers in the airfreight stick to it. The calculation volumetric weight is as follows:
(Length x width x height in cm) / 6000 = The volume weight in kilograms.
The actual weight of the cargo is compared with the volume weight and the higher weight is used for the transport cost calculation.
